A native of El Paso, where he now heads the Tribune’s border bureau, Aguilar has a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's degree in journalism from the University of North Texas.

In 2011, President Obama appointed him to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations.
